"Dowell Health/ Fitness Night" coming up on Friday, March 20th from 6-8pm. 

On March 5, 2009, we will have a primary and intermediate CRCT parent session. 

The first session will be at 6:30. PTA meeting will be at 7:00 and the second session will follow the PTA meeting

It will be a fun night full of health and fitness activity.

Happy Holidays! 12/09

Happy Holidays!

We are almost half way through your child's first grade year.  With that in mind please be sure that you are reading to your child nightly and that you are continually working on sight words.  In order for your child to receive a 3 on his/her report this 9 weeks he/she needs to know any 100 of the sight words.  Please let us know if you need another copy of the sight word lists, we have sent them with you at open house and we send out small lists sporadically.

Important Info: (Reminders)

Send in quarters to help raise money for families in need.  All of the money collected will purchase turkeys for Dowell families in need.

AR GOAL- Our AR goal this 9 weeks is 15 passed tests.  You child should have at least 8 by the half way point which is on 11/18.

Food Drive- If you would like to participate in our annual food drive please send in canned or dried fruits.

Please be sure that your child is reading his her guided reading group book and his/her library book and returning them to school daily.

What are we learning????

Math- *how to skip count by 2, 5, and 10 *how to use a number line and hundreds chart to add, subtract and skip count

Phonics- reviewing long a, reviewing long e

Reading- compare and contrast

Handwriting- we are almost finished with the capital letters, please encourage neat handwriting at all times

Writing- we are working on writing 3 sentences that stay on topic.  We are also working on capital letters where they belong  and punctuation at the end of the sentence.

                    Red Ribbon Week

RED RIBBON WEEK is October 27-31, 2008.  Please join the Dowell PTA and Staff this year as WE ELECT to be DRUG FREE.  Our theme this year is focused on teaching the students to choose a life without drugs.  It will also involve some vocabulary in regards to the Presidential election.  Our candidates are: Say No Sam (portrayed as Uncle Sam) and Do Drugs Doug (portrayed as a dirty, scruffy man).  Students will hear the persuading arguments for each candidate, their promises, and what they stand for. Then on Friday they will Elect to be Drug Free.

To help make this week memorable the students may participate in our fun dress up days as follows:

Monday- “Winners Don’t Do Drugs”…..wear a sports jersey

Tuesday- “I Vote for a Drug Free America”……wear red, white, blue

Wednesday- “Being Drug Free is No Sweat”….wear sweat shirt and pants

Thursday- “Embrace Hugs, Not Drugs”…..bring a stuffed animal

Friday- “Crazy about Living Drug Free”…wear red day and have crazy hair

Week # 3

Coming Soon: You child will be bringing home a tape player and a book on tape.  Please keep the tape player at home until December 12th.  We will send you a reminder closer to that date.  Please remind your child to listen to the book on tape nightly and return the book EVERY DAY.  It is very important that your child takes responsibility for the book and the tape player.

Week # 2!

We had a great first week of school. We will be sending home homework Monday- Thursday every week (unless we have a school event).  Please check your child's homework folder and sign it nightly. Also, please make sure that you child is reading for at least 20 minutes every night.  After reading each night fill out the reading log that is located in the homework folder.  Don't forget to wear tennis shoes on PE days.  The specials are listed on the homework sheet.

AT OPEN HOUSE:
In order to relieve parking congestion at Open House this Thursday, we will be offering a shuttle service from Macland Road Church of Christ to Dowell starting at 5 PM.  The shuttle will run every 10 minutes.
  Students younger than kindergarten will not be permitted to ride the bus.  Please use this service.
