Email Notification Service

Parents
The service that we use to automatically notify you when the blog is updated has changed their terms of service in such a way that an ad will begin showing up at the bottom of the email that comes to you. Your email address is still not being shared with anyone other than the school! The mere placement of advertising in school communications is of concern to us, especially since we have no control over what the ad may be.

We are exploring other means of providing this service to you at this time. For now, we ask your patience as we work through the concern. In the meantime, if you receive an ad that is objectionable to you, we would appreciate your notifying the school, and holding onto it so that it may be forwarded to proper personnel.

Thank you for your patience!

Two Weeks Down!

We've had a great couple of weeks so far!  We slashed right in to all of our subject areas.  Ask your child about the region they are presenting to the class.  All of the math classes are reviewing place value and number form right now.  Next week we will be meeting in our reading groups.

Thanks so much to all of you who volunteered to help out in the classroom.  I will be getting in touch with you soon if you sent a survey back.

Our PTA fundraiser is kicking off this week.  It would be great to have lots of participation from our class.  Your child should be bringing the information home soon.

The CRCT is over and the students did a great job.  Thank you so much for getting them here on time and making sure they got plenty of sleep and had a good breakfast.

In reading, we are working on author studies.  Each student has an assigned author and they are reading two books by them.  They will complete a book report on the first book and then an author presentation with a partner when they have completed both books.

We are also working on persuasive writing.  Have your students tell you some of their great points for having cell phones and ipods at school.

In Social Studies, we are wrapping things up with westward expansion and the Civil War.

Today I will be sending home registration cards and report card envelopes.  Please send these back as soon as possible.

April 10

I hope everybody had a great week off.  This week we're working hard to get ready for the CRCT.  Testing begins next Monday.  This week to get the kids excited about next week, we have a different theme for each day.  Tomorrow will be pajama day since we are 'resting for testing'.  Please make sure that pajamas are appropriate and slippers are not allowed.  Thursday we are going to 'be cool for testing' and the students are to wear shorts and tank tops (no spaghetti straps) as long as it is warm enough.  Friday we will have a pep rally and we are all wearing our Dowell t-shirts.

What can you to to help your child get ready for the test?

*Use some great online resources available on Dowell's home page.  Just scroll down past the pictures and click on the CRCT prep link.

*Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a good breakfast in the morning.  We want everybody awake and alert to be able to do their best.

*Be on time.  We start each section first thing in the morning and if your student is late,  they will have to make up that section at another time.

*Make sure that your child has a non-mechanical #2 pencil.

Congratulations to Eileen Carr, this month's Breakfast of Champions winner.

Congratulations to Gelacio, Eileen, Tommy, Bianca, and Maria for reaching their AR goals.  Way to go guys!

We are presenting our Social Studies projects tomorrow.  They have all been working hard and I'm excited to see the finished project.

Help!  After a winter full of runny noses and coughing, we are out of tissues and hand sanitizer.  If you would like to help us out, please send these items.

Don't forget, tomorrow is an early release day.  The students will be dismissed at 12:30.

    AR Goals

We are reviewing our AR goals this week.  I will be sending home a form with each student's goal and how many points they have earned so far.  The nine weeks ends March 16 and we will have a celebration for everybody who meets their goal by then.  We have about 30 minutes of silent reading every day in school and each student should be reading for at least 30 minutes every night at home.

We're starting our Revolutionary War research projects this week in Social Studies.  There are four groups of students that will be presenting information on one of four Revolutionary events (Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre, Intolerable Acts, and Stamp Act/Sugar Act).  They are in groups of four or five and will have the week to do research and prepare their presentations.

For students who are in my  math class, we will be having a math test this Wednesday the 28th.  This will cover the information we have learned on Geometry.  A study guide will be sent home.

Happy Valentines Day!

Remember that if you are bringing Valentines tomorrow, you need to bring enough for the whole class.  (There are 19 now).  I will send a class list home today so you can be sure that nobody is left out.  Candy treats are allowed with the Valentines.

Tomorrow the school will be selling baked goods for 50 cents.  All proceed go to the American Cancer Society.

We're wrapping up our Science unit this week and will begin the Revolutionary War in Social Studies next week.  Our writing for this nine weeks is informational writing.  We will tie that into our Social Studies and write about Revolutionary War figures.  In math, we are working hard on our geometry unit.  Everybody could use some extra practice using a protractor at home.  This website  http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/protractor.html  is a great resource to practice at home.

We had a lot of fun at the Fox Theatre yesterday.  Ask your child what they learned about Harriett Tubman.

Six Flags Reading Program!

Your child will be bringing information home today about the Six Flags reading program.  Please help your child earn a free ticket to Six Flags by reading for 6 hours between now and February 23rd.  You will receive a log to keep up with the minutes read that needs to be signed and returned by the 23rd.  I hope our class earns lots of tickets this year!

Please remember that Cosmic Bowling is coming up on Thursday, Feb. 8.  This wonderful annual event helps our school raise money for Relay for Life.  I hope you and your child will attend.  You will have a ball!

Our field trip to the Fox is this Monday.  Please be sure to return the permission slip and the money ($12) by Friday.

The holidays are here and we're having a lot of fun activities this week.  Thanks so much to all of you who brought in your $2 for pizza and the cokes.  I know everybody is excited and anxious to get out for the holidays and we've planned some really great things for them to do these last two days.

Congratulations to Elizabeth, Kerry, and Bianca for winning our class spelling bees.  They competed in a spell off to determine our class representative to the school spelling be.  Bianca was the winner with Elizabeth as the runner up.  Great job guys!

Remember, there's no school this Friday.  Also, on Thursday, those students that were in our PTA performance will do the show again for two school-wide performances.  The chorus will also be singing at these times.  Have a wonderful b reak and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  See you again on January 8th!
