If you are looking for something fun to do during the holidays, I can recommend the live Nativity at Austell Presbyterian Church.  I went last year and really enjoyed it.  It runs from Dec. 20-22 at 7:00 PM.  The church is located on Love Street in the city of Austell.  Also, the city itself is all lit up each night.  It is really pretty!

Barnes and Noble Night Tonight!

Parents, Don’t forget about Barnes and Noble night tonight.  It will be loads of fun!

 

Also, I’m sure your child has told you about our performance next Thursday night at Dowell’s Dinner Theater.  We will be performing a really cute holiday song called “Hip Hop Reindeer”.  Your child should wear a Christmas shirt, sweater, or a Christmas colored shirt (red, green).  He/she will also need to have a reindeer headband.  This should be a very enjoyable night for all of us!

Read to Succeed Logs Due!

1—600  minute Read to Succeed logs are due tomorrow.  Be sure your child turns it in tomorrow morning.  Thanks!

2—Don’t forget to send in items for the Food Drive.  Third graders should bring macaroni, dried or canned beans, and rice.  Thank you for your generosity!

Don't Forget to Save Box Tops!

DOWELL:  Doing Outstanding Work to Ensure a Love of Learning

 

Parents, this week we began learning how to calculate elapsed time.  They learned a way to do this using a T-chart.  Please ask your child to show you what they learned.  If they “get it” this way, we should have no problems with elapsed time the rest of the year!

BOX TOPS COMPETITION

The P.E. department has started their school wide box tops competition. The class that collects the most box tops in K, 1^st, and 2^nd as well as the class that collects the most box tops in 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th grade will win a popcorn party and money for free play equipment!!!

All you have to do is cut off the box tops on products you already have in your house like cereal boxes, pop tarts, yogurt, soup, paper products, school supplies etc. and give them to your teacher.

The money we raise with box tops is used to buy equipment for you to play with during P.E. and field day. The competition ENDS OCTOBER 19^th so start collecting and bring in those box tops!!!!!

Labor Day is Here!

DOWELL:  Doing Outstanding Work to Ensure a Love of Learning

 

Parents,  Mrs. Cyrier, one of our parents, made me aware of an opportunity that will piggy back on our study of rocks and minerals.  There will be a Geology Hike at Sweetwater Creek State Park on Mt. Vernon Road, Lithia Springs on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 9-11 AM.  Her note said Geologist, John Johnston will lead a moderate 2-mile hike identifying rock types and explaining how they formed.  There will also be a visit inside the ruins of the Civil War era New Manchester Mill alongside Sweetwater Creek.  The cost is $5.00 plus $5.00 for parking.  For more information call 770-732-5871.

Welcome Back!

DOWELL:  Doing Outstanding Work to Ensure a Love of Learning

 

What a great first week!  The students seem to be gelling as a group.  They are learning the routines.  Life is good!

 

Routines for your student include:

Get your agenda signed daily. 

Read for 20 minutes each night.

Study spelling words each night.

Take home the weekly papers in the Thursday folder.  Parents should sign the Weekly Report sheet.  You may keep the papers from the week.  Return the folder on Friday.

There is a spelling test every Friday.

There will be homework on a regular basis after this week.  Please look for it in your child’s homework folder.

Thank you so  much for all the gifts you gave me last week for teacher appreciation.  I feel overwhelmed by your generosity and kind words.  Thank you for thinking of me in such creative ways!

 

Please continue to work on multiplication facts and the long division process.  We are doing much better, but we still need practice with these processes.  A good website for long division is www.kidsnumbers.com.  It has a really good long division game.  Thank you!

Congratulations to our Danielle Blakely! She’s a member of Dowell’s Odyssey of the Mind team that is moving on to the World tournament in Maryland. Way to go!

FYI: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will be sold on Tuesdays to raise money for our Odyssey of the Mind team. This is a very expensive trip for these students. Please help them out by purchasing doughnuts. Thank you!
