Accelerated Reader

"MEWS" about Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader Program or A.R. is a large part of my reading curriculum.  Each student has taken an assessment on the computer which gives us a reading range for the student in order to better select media center books on his/her reading level.

I have begun to implement the program today, therefore, I would like for the students to read his/her library book at least two times.  (This helps with comprehension for the test.)  It is fine for you to read the book to your child.  I am teaching the students to take the A.R. tests on the computer and to become independent with the process.

This program increases a child's reading level and gives the child choices on books to read.  I have used the program in my classroom for many years and have seen the positive results!

I allow my students to use the media center passes whenever there is a need to check out a new book in order to encourage students to take frequent A.R. tests.  This teaches the students to be responsible and exert independence, two very important life skills.

Ways to Help-Ask your child if he/she has taken an A.R. test.  The library book will not be in the homework baggie, it will be in your child's book bag.

The goal is for each child to take at least TWO tests a week, however, the more tests, the better.  The students put a sticker on the A.R. chart every time they pass a test.  This gives a visual for each student to keep a count on the amount of books read on an individual basis.

Thank you for encouraging your child to read!!!
