Mrs. Pharr's Class

Where has the time gone?  It's hard to believe we have two weeks of school left.

We have been reviewing and polishing skills.

We have finished the unit on heat in  science.  The unit test is on Friday, May 9.  The students have taken home their folders to study for the test.

In the weekly folder this week is the results of the final reading inventory, SRI.  I have conferenced with each student individually about his or her reading progress.  Please read during the summer.  The public library is having a summer reading program.  The students have made so much progress.  If they don't read during the summer, they will slip in their reading levels.

The final multiplication fact quiz is  in the folder.  Please practice the facts during the summer so the students will be ready for fourth grade multiplication.  They will forget the facts if they don't practice them during the summer.

The last day of school is May 23.  On that day students are not allowed to bring book bags or anything that they must carry home on the bus.  I will have supplies they need for working that day.  Also, all work will go home before the last day of school.

CRCT scores are not expected until the end of May.  You will be informed when the scores are available.

Thank you for your support this year.  I have enjoyed teaching the students and seeing the progress they have made.

Mrs. Pharr's Class News

The BIG news in our class is CRCT.  The students have taken two sections of the test.  They have seemed very confident and have followed directions extremely well.  I know they have done their best. We will test again on Friday, 25th and again on Monday, 28th and Tuesday, 29th.  Thank you for your support at home.

We have been doing much review for the CRCT.  The students have read passages and answered questions about the passage.  They have practiced marking answers on bubble sheets and we have studied test-taking strategies.  They felt prepared going into the testing.  I assured them they were ready for the test.

Reading daily continues to be important.  Even when CRCT is over, much emphasis will continue to be placed on reading.  The students will take another  SRI computer test before the school year is over.  The goal is for each student to be on or above grade level by the end of the year.

In science we are working on sources of heat and how heat travels.  The students will do experiments in class to help them understand.

In social studies we are working on economics.  The students have many ideas about using money.  Through our lessons we will investigate how money is used in our economy.  We will explore wants and needs, opportunity cost, and budgets.

The field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center was wonderful.  It was an extention of our unit on habitats and Georgia.  Thank you to Mr. Evans for going with us.

Performing Arts Field Trip

The field trip to see "Duck Soup" is a Performing Arts event.  The permission forms were signed at the beginning of the school year when the Performing Arts forms were signed and returned.  The Cobb County School District arranges this trip for the schools.

Mrs. Pharr's Class News

The class will go 0n a field tip to see a production of "Duck Soup" on Wednesday, April 2 at the Cobb County Civic Center.  We do not need chaperones since this is a theater production which the county has set up for us.  We will leave school around 9:30 and return around 12:30.  We will eat lunch when we get back to school.  There is no reason to make special arrangements for lunch since we will eat at school.  Perhaps a healthy snack for before school is a good idea since we will eat lunch later than usual.

CRCT is April 23 through May 2.  We will begin testing in the morning and will finish for that day before we go to lunch.  Being at school on time is very important since no students will be admitted to the classroom after testing begins at 8:00.  It will be helpful for the student to bring a healthy snack  which he/she can eat at a break during testing.

Spring break is April 7-11.  Have a relaxing spring break!

The Chattahoochee Nature field trip is on April 14 which is on Monday when we return from spring break.  This is an outside trip so the students should dress for outside.  We will be gone from 9:00-2:00.  This trip will be a review of our habitat unit.  We will not carry a cooler, thus lunches should not need to be kept cool and should be in disposable bags.

We  reviewing for CRCT and practicing reading strategies.  We are using the format of the test to review thus the students will be familiar with what the test will be like.

Have a wonderful spring break!

Mrs. Pharr's Class News

Happy Valentine's Day!

The students have enjoyed activities that relate to Valentine's Day, yet we have followed the standards for teaching and learning.

We have begun a unit on government starting with the federal government.  A web site is posted on the blog.  We have used this site to collect information about government and complete an organizer for the three branches of government.

In math we are measuring using both customary and metric units of measurement.  Please practice multiplication facts.  A quiz is in the weekly folder.  At this point the students should know the facts.

The students did outstanding work on the habitats that we made in class.  The graded rubric is in the folder this week.

We are really working on reading in class.  The students are exposed to reading in several forms.  We do guided reading, independent reading, shared reading, literature circles, and reading in the content areas.  Reading daily at home is very important.

The Six Flags reading forms are due tomorrow, Friday 15.  Please sign the forms.
