What we are learning:
These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:
Social Studies – How do I identify the contributions of Harriet Tubman and George Washington Carver? During the month of February, in observance of Black History Month, we will be studying two of “Our American Heroes”. We will discuss how they helped to change American history and the way we live today.
Phonics – How do I read words containing consonant blends and digraphs? We have studied and identified words that begin with the consonant blends cl, cr, fr, gl and gr. Look around the house or in the neighborhood and find examples of words with these beginning consonant blends. For example, frog, glasses, crow, groceries, and clothes.
Reading – How do I distinguish fact from fiction and identify literary form? We are beginning to learn the differences between reality and fantasy. We have read non-fiction and fiction stories about penguins. Be sure to ask your child some of the facts that they have learned about penguins. One fact is that they only live in Antarctica which we just studied with our maps and globes.
Mathematics – How do I tell time to the nearest hour and half hour? Students are learning how to read a digital and analog clock to the nearest hour and half hour. Please spend as much time as possible with your child helping them learn how to tell time.
News from School:
Black History Program
On Thursday, February 17th, the Dowell Black History Program will be presented at Hillgrove High School in the auditorium beginning at 6:30 pm. Join Dowell students, parents and staff as they present information they have learned about famous inventors, scientist, politicians, and leaders that helped to shape our world today.
Winter Holiday Break
There will be NO SCHOOL during the week of February 21-25, 2011. Please use this time to work with your child on academic standards they have learned. Don’t forget to read daily, study addition and subtraction facts to 18, review counting money, and practice telling time. Have your child write a story about what they do each day to reinforce their writing skills.
