What's Happening in Our Class

What we are learning:

These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:

Science – How do I compare and describe various animals?  Students have learned that air, water, food and shelter are the basic needs for animals to survive and grow.  We have compared and identified animals in each of the six classifications of animals.  When outside with your child see if they are able to identify different animals and what classification they are apart of. 

Phonics – How do I read long vowel sounds in one syllable words? We have studied and identified words that contain the long ā, ē, ī, ō and ū vowels.  Look around the house or in the neighborhood and find examples of words that contain long vowels. 

Reading – How do I make connections between text and/or personal experiences?  We have discussed how poems paints pictures with words and students have written their own animal poem.  We have also discussed how to appreciate literature by looking and sharing our library books.

Mathematics – How do I compare and/or order the length, weight, or capacity of two or more objects? Students have used non-standard units of measurement, such as paperclips, cubes, and bowls.  We have compared estimates with actual measurements.  Their favorite activity was to see how many paperclips it took to measure their shoe.

Where:  Dowell Elementary
What and Who will be there:  Special Guest:  Kennesaw State University, Pro Health and Rehab, American Cancer Society, Living Waters Martial Arts Studio, Gold’s Gym, Cobb Parks and Recreation, Cobb County Food & Nutrition, Osborne High School JROTC.   Services:  Free vision and blood pressure screenings, nutritional and fitness tips from nutrition, health and fitness experts.  

 Come join the many fun activities and learn about how to stay healthy!

 Career Day and Careers on Wheels

Thursday, April 28^th individuals are needed to come and share their career with the Dowell students.   Please let me know if you are interested.

Friday, April 29^th Careers on Wheels will be held in the school bus lot.  Please let me know if you would like to share your mobile job with the students.

What's Happening in Our Class

What we are learning:

These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:

Science – What are the needs and basic parts of a plant?  Students have learned the basic needs of plants to grow and survive are:  food, water, air and light.  The parts of a plant are:  roots, stem, leaves, and flowers.  The highlight of our unit was taking our field trip to the Chattahoochee Nature Center to learn more about plants and animals.  Our next unit of study will be on animals. 

Phonics – How do I read words containing long vowels? We have studied and identified words that contain the long ā and ī vowels.  Look around the house or in the neighborhood and find examples of words that contain long vowels.  For example, ice, cape, slide, grapes, cane, etc.

Reading – How do I distinguish fact from fiction and identify literary form?  We are studying fiction and non-fiction stories and how to write a summary for these stories. 

Mathematics – How do I estimate, model, compare, order, and represent whole numbers up to 100? Students have used the Base Ten blocks to make and represent numbers up to 100.  Many students are struggling with identifying a Ten’s stick as 10 tens and not 1 ten.  Please continue to practice Place Value at home. 

News from School:

March Mathness
We are in the middle of our madness with March Mathness.  The students have been doing a great job dribbling toward the goal to take their shot at getting their Math facts correct.  Some of the students are dribbling a little faster than others so please have your child practice their addition and subtraction facts through 18 at home to increase their speed and accuracy.  Remember, students have 2 minutes to complete 20 Math problems.  There are 10 levels, at each level the student must pass 2 tests in order to write their name on the basketball and move to the next level to reach the basketball goal.  Let’s all work hard to reach the basketball goal by the end of March.

School Picture Day
Time to put on your best smile for the camera!  Our class picture will be made on Wednesday, March 23^rd.  Individual pictures will also be made for any student wishing to purchase a package.  The class picture must also be paid for in advance.  More information and money envelopes will be sent home soon. 

3^rd Nine Weeks Report Card
The 3^rd Nine Weeks Report Card will be in the Weekly Folder next Thursday, March 24^th.  Please sign the signature card and return it in the envelope on Friday.  The Report Card and additional papers may be kept at home.  If you have questions or concerns please let me know.

What we are learning:

These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:

Social Studies – How do I identify the contributions of Theodore Roosevelt?  President Roosevelt our 26^th President is best known for development of our National Park system.  He is known for his love of plants and animals.  We have also learned that he was the first President to own a car and it was purple inside.

Phonics – How do I read words containing consonant blends and digraphs? We have studied and identified words that begin with the consonant blends ch, sh.  Look around the house or in the neighborhood and find examples of words with these beginning consonant blends.  For example, chair, shoe, sheet, chimney, shelf, cheese. 

Reading – How do I distinguish fact from fiction and identify literary form?  We are studying non-fiction stories and how to write a summary for these stories.  We have learned some very interesting facts about rivers. 

Mathematics – How do I build number patterns using various concrete representations? Students are learning how to skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s both forwards and backwards.  Please help your child practice skip counting as much as possible to get them in the habit of jumping ahead or behind.

Dowell’s Arts Night
You are invited to Dowell's Arts Night, March 10th 5-7PM.  Come enjoy an evening of the Arts: An art show featuring your students framed artwork and music by Dowell students.   Art Show opens at 5Pm in the gym and performances begin at 5:30PM in the cafeteria! 

This is a fund-raiser for the art program here at Dowell! Frames with your children’s art work will be available for purchase.  Cash or check only, please!

 

First Grade Field Trip

The 1^st Grade will be taking a field trip on Tuesday, March 15 to the Chattahoochee Nature Center.  A reminder that all permission slips and money is due by Friday, March 4^th.   Thank you to all the parents that have already returned the information.
