How are we navigating:
These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:
Reading – How do I identify the main idea and supporting details of informational text read or heard? We have read several stories and have identified the main idea and supporting details. As you are reading stories at home or talking about their library book, please be sure to ask them what is the main idea of the book.
Phonics – How do I identify beginning, middle and ending sounds? In Words Their Way, we have studied the short ŭ vowel sound. We have identified words in the –ug, -ut, and –un word families. Play the rhyming game at home by having your child say as many words as possible that rhyme with each word family. For example – -ut, hut, nut, but, and cut for a few.
Science – How do I identify the different types of weather and the characteristics of each? We have discussed sunny days, rainy days, stormy days and windy days. We will also be discussing each season of the year and the weather associated with each. This is a great time of the year since we are changing from one season to another, and the students will also being changing the types of clothes they will be wearing due to the change.
Writing – How do I become a great writer? Students have been writing a story about Fall using the senses to help them describe the season. For example, seeing the leaves beginning to change colors, and feeling the cooler temperatures.
Mathematics – How do I interpret bar graphs, tally graphs and picture graphs? The students have been sharing their favorites and making graphs to reflect their preferences and to see how many have the same.

AR Tests
Students are checking out at least 1 AR Leveled book (Pink Dot Book) to read for a comprehension test. Please be sure to read the book for homework each night and ask them questions about the story. Each student should pass at least 2 tests a week. We can also use parent volunteers (shipmates) to come in and help read the test to the students. Please let me know if you are available and up for the task.
Box Tops
Our P.E. Department is having its annual Box Top Collection Contest. Please help our class win by sending in Box Tops found on many food items. All Box Tops must be turned in by Wednesday, October 19th.
