How are we navigating learning in our class?

How we are navigating....

These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:

Reading – How do I recognize plot, setting and character within texts, and compare and contrast these elements among texts?  The students have enjoyed comparing and contrasting The Three Little Pigs and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.  We are looking forward to our field trip to the Theatre on the Square to see the play production of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. 

Phonics – How do I read words containing consonant blends and digraphs?  In Words Their Way, we are studying the consonant digraphs ch and sh.  At home please help your child identify words that begin with ch and sh. 

Health – How do good food choices help me stay healthy?  We have been identifying foods from each food group.  We have also compared foods from a listing on which ones where healthy and the ones that were unhealthy for our bodies.  For example carrots are a healthy snack but potato chips are not healthy. 

Writing – How do I become a great writer?  Students have been completing a graphic organizer on their favorite season of the year.  They have taken the graphic organizer and written a complete story using it as their guide. 

Mathematics – How do I solve word problems to 12?  We have identified the key words to look for in order to decide if we must add or subtract to find the correct answer.  Addition key words are:  in all, altogether, sum, total.  Subtraction key words are:  take away, left, fewer, difference.

Navigating the year with news from school....

Conference Week
Our yearly conference week will be October 24-28, 2011.  Please remember student will be dismissed from school at 12:30 each day.  If your child’s transportation will change, you must send me a note in writing with the change.  I look forward to seeing you and discussing your child’s progress so far this year.

Fall Festival
Our annual PTA Fall Festival will be held on Friday, October 28^th from 5:00-8:00 pm.  Please join us for an evening of family fun.

How we are navigating learning in our class?

How we are navigating:

These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:

Reading – How do I identify the beginning, middle and end of a read aloud or independently read text?  In the stories we have read, we have been sequencing the events and details of the text.  The students have learned that you can’t figure out the end without knowing the beginning and middle, and knowing the middle they are still trying to figure out how it started and can’t determine the ending.  As you are reading the library books at home, please discuss the sequence of the story with your child.

Phonics – How do I identify beginning, middle and ending sounds?  In Words Their Way, we are reviewing all of our short vowel sounds.  We have studied short a, as in lamb, short e, as in hen, short i as in pig, short o, as in frog, and short u, as in tug.

Science – How do I identify the different forms of precipitation and how do I recognize changes in water when it melts and freezes?  As you can tell, we have been studying water.  The students have been doing some really cool water experiments in Science Lab with Mrs. Sullivan.  We will also be studying how water evaporates back in to the clouds.

Writing – How do I become a great writer?  Students wrote a story about their favorite season of the year to go along with their Computer Lab assignment of seasons on their Learn to Type program. 

Mathematics – How do I complete addition and subtraction facts to 10?  The students have used the strategies such as, counting on, counting back, number lines, and pictures to help them complete their “facts” assessment for this 9 weeks.

Our yearly conference week will be October 24-28, 2011.  Please remember student will be dismissed from school at 12:30 each day.  If your child’s transportation will change, you must send me a note in writing with the change.  You are also receiving your child’s scheduled date and time.  Please return the bottom of the page as soon as possible to let me know if you will or will not be able to attend. 

Box Tops
Our P.E. Department is having its annual Box Top Collection Contest.  Please help our class win by sending in Box Tops found on many food items.  All Box Tops must be turned in by Wednesday, October 19^th.
