How we are navigating…
These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:
Reading – How do I identify the main idea and supporting details of informational text? We are learning how to read charts, labels, and pictures in non-fictional stories. We have been identifying the main idea and supporting details of information text about careers. We had fun identifying different types of jobs in the story, Guess Who? We also learned about other careers in the story, Worksong.
Phonics – How do I distinguish between long vowels and short vowels? Our focus this week has been on all of the long vowel sounds and comparing them to the short vowel sounds. For example long a – short a cane and can. See if your student can give you any other comparisons at home.
Social Studies – How did Theodore Roosevelt make life better for people in the United States? Interesting facts we discovered about him were, he opened the first 5 National Parks due to his love for plants and animals. He and his family had numerous animals living with them in the White House – 5 bears, parrots, cats, dogs, snakes, etc. a regular zoo. He was the first President to own a car, and the inside of the car was purple. Of course the Teddy Bear was named after him.
Writing – How do I write an informational piece of writing? Students are using a graphic organizer to help them learn to write “How To” stories. Their stories this week were on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and how to brush your teeth. If they say they don’t know how to brush their teeth before bed, just remind them they wrote a “how to” story on it.
Mathematics – How do I understand parts of a whole? We identified that a fraction is a part of something, and that the parts must be equal. The students were introduced to ½ and ¼ this week. We also used ¼ to make a “Fractionpillar”.
