How we are navigating...
These are the essential questions for our Standards and Units of Study:
Reading – How do I make connections between text and/or personal experience? We will be studying informational text. We will learn how to read charts, labels, and pictures in non-fictional stories. Our goal will be for students to share information they already know about our informational topics and what is already written in the stories we are reading.
Phonics – How do distinguish between long vowels and short vowels? Our focus this week has been on long ā and long ī words. The students have learned two rules for long vowels, 1) The silent e (magic e) at the end of a word usually makes the first vowel long. 2) When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking (usually). For example, can and cane, see if your child can tell you any other long vowel words that we have learned.
Health – How do my muscles make me move? We have discovered that our muscles and bones work together to give our body shape, and that is why we do not look like a spaghetti noodle. We found out that our muscles are used to make us smile and frown, turn our neck from side to side, and help our arms and legs bend and straighten.
Writing – How do I write an informational piece of writing? Students are using a graphic organizer to help them learn to write “How To” stories. Their story this week is on how to build a snowman. Wouldn’t it be nice if it snowed and the students could practice what they have written about in class?
Mathematics – How do I count on, count back, make 10, or use doubles to add and subtract? We have been using these math strategies to review addition and subtraction, but our facts are now up to 20. Please continue to practice adding and subtracting at home daily.
