Thanks to all the parents who came out last week for Dowell conferences. We had an almost 100% turnout in our class. Hopefully, many of you left the conference with a firm grasp on how your child is currently performing. Our aim was to provide you with ways that you can help struggling students as well as how students performing at an advanced level can continue to be challenged at home.
Newsy notes: Please do not forget to come to Math Night (Thursday 10/26) from 6-8. We will have fantastic math games, pizza AND lots of fun!
In guided math, we will continue to review mean, median, mode and range. We are currently developing our fraction sense and studying how division of whole numbers can be represented by a fraction. We are learning how to use improper fractions, fractions, and decimals interchangeably. From there, we will be studying how the value of a fraction is not changed when both the numberator and denominator are multiplied by the same number (i.e., finding equivalent fractions). Next will be adding common fractions (after learning how to find common denominators) and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
In Guided Writer's Workshop, we're integrating 6+1 traits with the writing process to write a fantasy narrative essay. We are working on developing sensory details and organizing our ideas in a logical sequence. We are also working on revising our fantasy narratives for organization. We are also developing strong a strong beginning, middle and ending to our fantasy narrative essays. This 1/2 of the 2nd nine weeks will be on developing stronger ideas through revision.
In Guided Reading we're learning about story elements: character, plot and setting. We are also identifying the main idea and supporting details in expository text (integrated science and social studies).
In Science, we are completing our unit on landforms and constructive and destructive forces. We are finalizing our unit by looking at how humans change landforms (e.g., by building levees and jetties).
Our next Social Studies unit will begin 11/1. We will be developing our historical understandings by describing how life changed in America at the turn of the century (20th century). We will begin with discussing cowboys and cattle trails, discussions about the Chisolm Trail, famous inventors like Thomas Edison, The Wright Brothers, George Washington Carver, and Alexander Graham Bell.
Our current read aloud is "Time Windows ", by Kathryn Reiss
