Thank You Parents and Community!

The Dowell Singers Singathon was a great success!  I was so pleased to see so many parents, siblings, and community members attend the singathon and offer to help out.  Many hands made for light work, and all seemed to have a great time.  It was also nice to see former members of the Dowell Singers (and their parents) who dropped by to wish us well, and sit in for a song or two.  Also, Mr. Davis provided a wonderful rendition of "America the Beautiful".  Thank you to our Partners in Ed, Porter Family Clinic, Sun Valley Beach, Stevie B's, and Publix for providing all our supplies.  Forms and pledge donations should be turned into Dowell by Oct. 6th.   Rehearsal will be on Thursday, October 4th this week as Mrs. Swint will be in a music leadership workshop on Wednesday.  Please see me if you have a conflict.

Dowell Singers: Singathon Update

Singathon is next Friday, Sept. 28th from 2:30-6:30pm.  All students need a permission slip to attend.  If you have lost the form, a handwritten note will suffice.  Students are expected to participate; fundraising is optional.  This is a great experience for students and parents!  Please plan to drop by to help, or observe the festivities.  Students will be served a snack, and dinner.  Please make sure 4th graders send in a bag of plain chips, and 5th graders 2 liter sodas for our food supplies no later than Wednesday of this week.   I want to say a big thank you to our Dowell Partners in Ed who are helping us!  Sun Valley Beach is donating hot dogs and buns, and Dr. Debby Porter, or the Porter Family Clinic is donating cookies.  Publix, courtesy of Mr. Chip Broderson, is donating our condiments.  If you have a chance, please thank these folks for their help.  Pledge forms and donations can be turned in starting Friday, or anytime up until Oct. 6th.   A copy of the singathon pledge form can be downloaded.   Basically, asking friends and relatives to sponsor your child in the singathon, and giving a donation, either per hour, or total amount.  Sponsors can donate ahead of time, or wait until after the event.   Thanks so much for helping us make this a great event for our children!  Parent support is critical for success!

We are also going to offer as a fundraiser Stevie B coupons for sale.  Coupons for a free pizza buffett will be available for purchase for $1 each.  Now, for our family of 5, all of us eating out for just $5 makes me think it is back in 1970!  Coupons will be available  for purchase at the singathon.  Thank you to our partne,  Stevie B's and Kathe  Schellman, for setting this up for us.

Be sure your student attends Chorus this week, Wednesday, Oct. 26th to rehearse and get final announcements!  Thanks so much, Mrs. Swint

Music News and Notes from the Classroom

Explorations abound in the music classroom!  Kindergarten students are working on contrasts in music - loud and soft, high and low, singing versus calling voices.  Juba is our new favorite song and dance!
First Graders have explored steady beat versus no steady beat in music.  Moving to music that does not have a steady beat is REALLY Fun!  "Windshield Wipers and Watermelon Man" are our new favorites.
In Second Grade, students are exploring rhythms, and how the rhythm of the words differs from steady beat in music.  Stay tuned for "Big Heart", a fun K-8 singing tune!
Third Graders are working on reading and notating rhythms - ask them to perform "Aligator Pie" for you....
Our Fourth Grade have worked very hard to get off to a great start with recorders.  They can play and read three notes, BAG!  Please remind them to keep recorders in bookbags so that they are always ready for music class in the rotation.  Students should practice at home frequently.
In 5th grade, students worked on identifying intervals and training their ear for music skills.  They are working on a recorder piece, "BA Superhero" which is a K-8 take off on Mission Impossible or the Incredibles,  depending on whether you watched TV in the 1960's.
It is my goal that all students learn skills in music, but most importantly develop a positive relationship with music that will last a lifetime!

Email Notification Service

Parents
The service that we use to automatically notify you when the blog is updated has changed their terms of service in such a way that an ad will begin showing up at the bottom of the email that comes to you. Your email address is still not being shared with anyone other than the school! The mere placement of advertising in school communications is of concern to us, especially since we have no control over what the ad may be.

We are exploring other means of providing this service to you at this time. For now, we ask your patience as we work through the concern. In the meantime, if you receive an ad that is objectionable to you, we would appreciate your notifying the school, and holding onto it so that it may be forwarded to proper personnel.

Thank you for your patience!
